Euronutra & World Alzheimer’s Day

The 21st of September is Alzheimer’s world day. Euronutra doesn’t want to forget about this disease which affects more than 46 million people worldwide. Half million of those affected people are Spanish and, according to INE, this number will continue to grow until reaching million people in the year 2050.

According to WHO, Alzheimer is the most common cause of dementia and may contribute to 60–70% of cases.

This disease is characterized by the degeneration of brain cells and nerves, disrupting the transmitters which carry messages in the brain, particularly those responsible for storing memories.

An emerging body of evidence suggests that an increased prevalence of insulin abnormalities and insulin resistance in Alzheimer’s disease may contribute to the disease pathophysiology and clinical symptoms. These findings suggest that insulin may contribute to normal cognitive functioning and that insulin abnormalities may exacerbate cognitive impairments, such as those associated with Alzheimer’s disease.1

Having an insulin-mimetic ingredient such as caromax d-pinitol may have a positive impact on this condition. D-pinitol has shown that can exert an insulin-like effect to improve glycaemic control.
